State Departments are vital to the success of the Our Promise Campaign, providing a Campaign Liaison from each department to coordinate the campaign working alongside United Way and Our Promise staff. You can also request a nonprofit to attend an event or speak during your campaign via the Nonprofit Outreach Program.
Campaign Liaisons are employees designated by their department’s leadership team to plan the campaign in their local departments. They decide campaign timeframes, plan out all campaign communications for their teams, and plan and coordinate campaign events for their offices alongside a designated staff person from United Way/Our Promise.
Who should you nominate?
The individuals you select will be directly responsible for the coordination of the campaign for your department and will work directly with a designated staff person from United Way/Our Promise.
Once the campaign liaison is established, your designated staff person will reach out to begin planning your department’s campaign. The roles and responsibilities, as well as the resources needed to ensure a successful campaign, will be discussed in detail at this first meeting. The Campaign Liaisons will attend monthly meetings through December to report on the status of campaign activities.
The Our Promise Nonprofit Outreach Program is a great way to connect state employees with the nonprofits who benefit from their generous contributions.
The Our Promise Nonprofit Outreach Program organizes two types of events:
- Speaking Engagements: Trained nonprofit speakers can join your meeting in person or virtually to share their nonprofit agency’s experiences, programs and results directly with employees.
- Nonprofit Fairs: Multiple nonprofits can join your event and host a table to share information about their services to your employees.

Help Run The Our Promise Campaign In Your State Department
Each year, Our Promise asks state agencies and departments to loan one or more of their valued employees to participate in the Leaders United Program for a 12-week working session (September – December) to assist in the annual giving campaign. Leaders United participants (LU’s) serve as an extension of the Our Promise team and work full-time in their local United Way office.
The Leaders United program was created to align professional leadership and development opportunities of the campaign with CalHR’s Leadership Competencies. This program targets analysts and staff services managers, integrating a framework of topics for each competency to enhance their leadership capabilities.
A Unique Professional Development Opportunity
Leaders United strives to provide a unique opportunity for professional and personal development including: project, time & financial manager, public speaking, negotiation, communication, data analysis, team-building, fundraising, recognition, networking, problem solving and much more!
