Emerging Leaders in Action!
During the month of February, Emerging Leaders participated in two volunteer opportunities. Thank you to the volunteers from Emerging Leaders who helped with the following:
First, several members went to the Health Education Council site of the United Way Fit Kids program. Volunteers took a tour of the Grant High School garden and demonstration kitchen before helping high school students lead activities with a group of elementary school age Fit Kids who were on a field trip to visit the garden.
After sharing some laughs and completing some fun icebreakers with the Fit Kids, the group assisted with cooking meatball soup! For some students, it was their first attempt at cooking and they were surprised to learn what they were capable of. Fit Kids is working to decrease childhood obesity by preventing weight gain for children at risk of obesity and promoting weight loss for children who are already obese. Youth and their parents will learn about the importance of healthy nutrition and physical activity, as well as how to include them in their daily lives. And we’re seeing great results! Learn more about Fit Kids and consider bringing your group out to volunteer and see the program in action!
Second, several members came out to the STARRY Night Book Drive event to help with set-up, the reading program and clean-up. Volunteers greeted our young guests who came out to hear some stories read to them at Barnes in Noble in Citrus Heights. Volunteers also helped pass out milk and cookies to participants as well as assisting with educational arts and crafts projects. This event was centered around the 2nd Annual STAR Readers Book Drive. Thanks to your support, we collected 660 books for the children in the United Way STAR Readers project!
