Fern Shaw, Volunteer
Always in motion, this Can-Do Volunteer shares her inspiration with us.

This month the Community Engagement team sat down with one of our most ardent supporters in the corporate arena, Fern Shaw. Ms. Shaw has headed up numerous projects for UPS at several of our Nonprofit Partners over the last couple months, so we wanted take some time to get to know her and thank her for her incredible work with our team.

Community Engagement: Good Morning! Thanks for taking the time to sit down with us, can you tell us a little about yourself?

Fern Shaw:  My name is Fern Shaw. I am married to a wonderful man, my husband John and I have two beautiful children, Jasmine who is three and Jack, who is one.

I began my career at UPS about 10 years ago as an Intern after I graduated from the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR), with a degree in engineering.  After joining UPS I decided to continue my education and now posses a Master’s degree in finance.  Over the course of my career here at UPS I have been given a variety of assignments but none more challenging then my current assignment as Division Manager in charge of the 3 buildings located here in the Sacramento Region and the more than 1200 employees that work for me.  Those buildings include West Sacramento, Cordova and Rocklin.

CE: What do you enjoy outside of work? Any hobbies or passions you’d like to share?

FS: I enjoy snowboarding and road biking when I am not working.  I have always been a big believer in fitness and do my best to stay in shape by exercising on a regular basis.  Some of my favorite hobbies include snowboarding in the winter and road biking the rest of the year.  I love being outside as much as possible and staying in good physical condition.

CE: How did you get involved with United Way California Capital Region (or United Way in general)?

FS:  UPS has always been a big believer in what United Way is and stands for in our communities…that’s how I got involved.  Now I take great pride in giving back to our community and encouraging my employees to give back as well.  I am very proud to say that I have now been giving to United Way for the past 10 years.  This year I am taking on the role as the United Way Coordinator for the entire NorCal District.  The district reaches as far north as the border of Oregon and as far south as Fresno Ca. It also covers all of northern Nevada all the way down to Las Vegas.

CE: How are you helping us impact our local community?

FS: Aside from the money we raise at UPS, my greatest sense of accomplishment is the amount of time we spend volunteering here in the Sacramento Region.  I am very proud of all of the people who work for and with me and how giving they are.  We have become the leader in our district for volunteer hours!

CE: What’s your favorite experience/story from your work with United Way or at a volunteer project?

FS: On several occasions we did volunteer work for one of our favorite non-profits here in the region, Koinonia Home for Teens.  Last year we exceeded 100 hours of volunteer time which qualified them for a grant from the UPS foundation.  I was so pleased when Koinonia received a check from UPS in the amount of $5,000.  I can’t tell you how proud I am of all the people who made that possible!

CE: Tell us something that inspires you!

FS: I am truly inspired by working mothers everywhere.  I know how difficult it can be to juggle your work life as well as your home life.   But most of all I am inspired by my children! They make such great strides every day and I am privileged to watch them grow and am so proud of them.

CE: Last but not least! What’s your favorite quote? (or a motivational piece of advice)

FS: Go big or go home!

Fern, thank you so much for everything you do and for the dedication you’ve shown to our Sacramento community!
