Woodland Read To Succeed Tutors

We help kids stay on track and reach important educational milestones. Throughout the school year, volunteer tutors help first and second grade students, who test below standard on Beginning Phonics Skills Test (BPST), become stronger readers.

Volunteers work with pairs of students during a 25 minute session to improve specific phonics skills by:
•    Magnetic letter time which focuses on building and decomposing words
•    Reading small stories or books that target the missing phonics for the students
•    Writing words or sentences with the target phonics on a white board or composition book.

Volunteer training includes child development expectations for the target age groups, activities to build relationship between the volunteer and the child, reading the BPST, activities to improve phonics skills.
Volunteers must attend two 2-hour trainings, commit to one hour per week in the classroom and complete LiveScan fingerprinting and provide a current TB test.
