Greeter – Volunteers greet everyone visiting the site to create a pleasant atmosphere. You are an important first contact for clients helping coordinate traffic flow and determining the type of assistance needed. Tax law certification is not required for this position.

Interpreter – Volunteers provide free language interpreter services to clients who are not fluent in English. Basic tax knowledge is helpful, but it is not required for this position.

Screener – Volunteers assist clients with completing paperwork and verifying that all documents are present prior to preparation. Success in this position allows clients and preparers to focus on ensuring an accurate return is completed in a timely manner.

Tax Preparer – Volunteers complete and successfully certify in tax law training, including the use of electronic filing software, to provide free tax return preparation for eligible taxpayers. No prior tax preparation experience is necessary – just a desire to learn.

  • Certification: Volunteer Standards of Conduct, Basic or Advanced Exam

Computer Specialist – Volunteers have a working knowledge of personal computers, software and communications systems. Tax law certification is not required for this position. If working at a self-prepare site you must become familiar with the various tax software option(s) available at your site. Although you may have less taxpayer interaction than most volunteers, you must be patient with those individuals who may not be as computer literate.

Tax Coach – Volunteers provide tax law assistance and guide taxpayers in preparing their own tax returns.

  • Certification: Volunteer Standards of Conduct, Basic or Advanced Exam

Table Advocate – Volunteers attend events throughout the area to promote VITA tax services with enthusiasm and energy. You educate the public about the VITA tax program and assist with scheduling appointments. Tax law certification is not required for this position. Bilingual volunteers are encouraged to request this position.

Survey Associate – Volunteers conduct surveys and collect data with clients using methods such as interviews and online questionnaires. You assist clients with completing online surveys using hand-held tablets. Tax law certification is not required for this position. Bilingual volunteers are encouraged to request this position.

Tax Appointment Scheduler – Volunteers screen inbound callers seeking tax assistance services, providing appointment scheduling and/or referrals to services including the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program, AARP Tax Aid and My Free Taxes. Tax law certification/experience is not required for this position. Volunteers are provided training by 2-1-1 Sacramento covering the topics of call handling techniques, tax assistance programs/screening and use of call handling systems. Bilingual volunteers are encouraged to request this position.

Child Care Attendant – Volunteers observe and monitor children’s play activities while parents have their tax return prepared. Age range of children may vary from 2 years to 9 years. Volunteers are encouraged to lead activities such as reading, drawing, handcrafts, games, singing. Materials will be provided. Volunteers are not required to change diapers, prepare food or serve meals or refreshments. Fingerprinting and background checks are required for this role.
