Oh the Places We’ve Been
Reading across the region for Dr. Seuss's birthday.
“You’re never too old, too wacky, too wild, to pick up a book and read to a child”
– Dr. Seuss
On March 1, 2019, we had 18 volunteers give their day to 5 schools across the Capital Region for the National Education Association’s Read Across America Day, celebrating Dr. Seuss’ birthday. Going to more than 40 kindergarten to sixth-grade classrooms, the volunteers engaged with over 1,500 students in activities, talked about their careers, and then read to them from books that the classrooms ultimately got to keep. A volunteer that spent the afternoon in an autistic class even had a student, who in the past has been very nervous in front of strangers, read to them too, something that she described as a “very rewarding and special experience.”
“The looks on their faces when we came walking towards the blacktop while they were playing was priceless! We felt like celebrities,” said Linda R. Allmendinger with UFG Insurance.
Thank you to our amazing volunteers for your help and happy reading!
