Peanut Butter With A Purpose

News

Child hunger is an especially critical issue when school is out in the summertime as many children no longer have access to free or reduced-cost school lunches. Sadly, even mild malnourishment in young children can lead to stunted growth and delayed cerebral development.

In an effort to assist many families who struggle to feed their families during the summer, Save Mart Supermarkets will host a creative donation drive and invite you to get involved.

May 11-31 all Save Mart and Lucky stores throughout the region will be collecting peanut butter to help stock the pantries of local food banks including  Sacramento Food Bank & Family Services (SFBFS). Peanut butter was chosen because it is a high protein, shelf-stable food, often associated with children. Giving this initiative a boost, Jif peanut butter is offering a buy-one, get-one promotion making it easy for shoppers to donate a jar of peanut butter each time they purchase one.

“This creative twist on a food drive is truly impactful,” shares Blake Young, President/CEO of Sacramento Food Bank & Family Services. “Families in our community who have found themselves in difficult situations are incredibly appreciative of food items that are not only nutritious, but kid-friendly. Save Mart Supermarkets has made it so easy to get involved and help; anyone can support a family in need, right here in our community, by purchasing a container of peanut butter, or two!”

On Wednesday May 21, children enrolled in SFBFS’ Youth Education program will participate in a hands- on nutrition education session to learn about the health benefits of peanut butter and make a variety of creative snacks. Please join us from 4:30-5:00 pm to meet some of the children who will benefit from this wonderful peanut butter drive.

Looking for ways to get involved and support a local family this summer? Stop by any participating Save Mart Supermarket to purchase and donate peanut butter.
