Long-term, sustainable community development is crucial for neighborhoods to rise from poverty. We work with residents in targeted undervalued communities to build capacity and turn resources into power to make change. We value lived experiences and work with, not for, community members.
United Way serves as a community mobilizer by harnessing a community’s collective power. Through direct engagement, organization, and community leadership, we work with community members to help end poverty and bring about a more just and equitable Capital Region.
STARTING AT SQUARE ONE
We worked to ensure residents’ voices were heard in Marisol Village Housing during redevelopment. We held 21 one-on-one meetings with residents, identified seven power group leaders to meet with community stakeholders, and gave six community presentations and trainings to support sustainability.
