Hats off to NCCC Team Blue
NCCC VISTAs play vital role in supporting VITA program
The mission of the AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC) program is to employ direct service to build stronger communities and develop future leaders. United Way California Capital Region hosts NCCC volunteers each year to help with our annual Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program.
The NCCC team is a vital part of our efforts to help low-income households claim California and federal Earned Income Tax Credit dollars, as well as other tax credits for which they are eligible, through the VITA program. These refunds are of tremendous assistance in helping families build short- and long-term financial wellness, which leads to improved health and educational outcomes for adults and children.
This year, we received a team of 12 AmeriCorps NCCC’s to help with the VITA program operated by United Way California Capital Region and trained through the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) program. All have been certified; five of them have been certified at the advanced level and three have taken on the duties of site coordinator. They have taken over two VITA sites where they screen clients, input the returns, review every return, transmit the returns, resolve any rejected returns, and most importantly, are able to resolve issues by independently researching the available resources.
Here is a look at the NCCCs in action:
NCCCs have also played a vital role in assisting the 2-1-1 call center in making tax appointments and directing callers to community services available in our area. One of the NCCC’s from Minnesota, Rachel Will, took an extended Spanish class while in school. She was very excited to use her language skills at a Spanish tax event we had. She did an amazing job asking questions and assisting clients.
Our VITA NCCCs are a true joy to have. We couldn’t be more proud of them. To learn more about the VITA and free tax preparation services, click here.
