Inspired by my experience at United Way

Diana Chun, Marketing Events Intern

Earlier this year, I was a newbie to United Way and I was so excited when I found out I had gotten the chance to intern here.  I had never worked with an organization like this before, so I didn’t really know what to expect. The dedicated staff immediately welcomed me and showed me exactly why they do what they do. A lot of work gets done here, but it’s not just for a paycheck—it’s for something so much bigger.  Every bit of work goes towards giving support to our great community in the areas that need it most. Now, four months later, I am a complete advocate for the notion that every community should live the spirit of generosity and LIVE UNITED.

In my time with United Way as a Marketing Events intern, I’ve seen just how many nonprofit partners we work with, how many supportive volunteers we have, and how much all of these people give. United Way offers members of the community the choice of how to help those in their own backyard. The help isn’t coming from people so far removed from the community that they don’t know what the problems are or don’t care—it comes from the people who live it everyday. Everyone involved with United Way creates a change that has a lasting impact.  It’s amazing to think that if every community worked in such a way, how the nation as a whole would improve. The big picture of the kind of work that we do here is really astounding.

Not only have I learned a lot from working here and met a lot of great people, I think I’ve changed as a person for the better after being inspired by how much of a difference people can really make. I previously mentioned how I had never worked with an organization like United Way. As my time here is nearing an end, I am realizing that this is probably because there really is no organization quite like United Way out there in its ability to better the world on such a large scale by focusing on each community need. Currently, I’m looking forward to the 3rd Annual Toilet Paper Drive to see how much we can give when everyone comes together.

I’m so glad that I got to experience working with a such a big-hearted group and I would like to thank the entire United Way staff for giving me this opportunity.
