Internship Learning Opportunities

The Special Events intern will work 15-20 hours per week on all major events held by United Way California Capital Region. These events include, but are not limited to the California State Employee Charitable Campaign Thank You event, United Way Thank You event, Income and Education Project events, The 4th  annual LIVE UNITED Toilet Paper Drive and various affinity group events.

The intern will learn and perform aspects of event planning and management from start to finish. This position requires a detail oriented and motivated individual with a passion for event planning. The intern will acquire administrative skills through hands-on work experience in a fast-paced nonprofit environment. Through the internship program, students will have the opportunity to learn more about their community as well as enhance their personal and professional leadership skills.

United Way California Capital Region is a trend-setter that brings the area’s leading nonprofits together to make a difference on issues affecting our community. We work in partnership with more than 750 employers in Amador, El Dorado, Placer, Sacramento and Yolo counties to raise money through workplace giving campaigns that enable donors to give through payroll deduction to the charities of their choice. United Way distributes funds to more than 150 nonprofit organizations that provide services to meet the most critical needs of the community.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Vendor coordination
  • Event marketing
  • Staff assignment coordination
  • Registration with online database
  • Confirmations and reminders to attendees
  • Promotion for events via website and social media
  • Budget management
  • Sponsorship benefits
  • Assist with nonprofit agency fairs
  • Assist with managing volunteers
  • Billing and payment follow-up
  • Assist the Marketing and Events Manager
  • Other duties as assigned


  • Junior or senior Marketing, PR, Business or Communications major with a minimum 3.0 GPA
  • Excellent communication skills, verbal and written, including the ability to communicate well in a variety of settings with a variety of stakeholders
  • Fast mover and thinker with high level of creativity
  • Self-starter who needs little direction or guidance
  • High level of energy and dynamic personality
  • Hard worker with outstanding work ethic and willingness to do what it takes to get the job done
  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills
  • Ability to use independent judgment and make sound decisions
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Facebook and Twitter
