August 5, 2010 -- As I am reflecting on the various accomplishments that United Way has undertaken in the past few months, I realized the enormity of the tasks we have set for ourselves, increasing graduation rates, helping households become financial self-sufficient and impacting obesity rates. At times, I feel like a very small fish in a very large pond.

July 27, 2010 -- Today a bunch of us from the United Way went out to serve our community. We chose for our project that we would work at the Sacramento Food Bank and Family Services. For three hours we toiled packing groceries for  people in need of food into bags for distribution.

July 19, 2010 -- I had an amazing opportunity to attend an Executive Resource Development Institute Conference funded by the Lilly Grant in Boston last week. My co-worker, Katie Weber, has been involved with the institute for awhile. The insititute is focused on helping United Ways in major markets around the country fundraise more effectively.

Just over a week ago I attended the Child Abuse Prevention Center’s annual gala and was very honored to accept the Inspirations 2010 Philanthropy Award on behalf of United Way’s Women in Philanthropy. It was so great to see the community come out in support of CAPC. There were hundreds of people in attendance all giving their time and money in the fight against child abuse.

Youth who drop out of High School have lower earnings, poorer health and higher rates of unemployment, mortality, criminal behavior and incarceration.
