Sound the Alarm: Save a Life!
This fall, Red Cross volunteers and our partners will install 100,000 free smoke alarms in high risk neighborhoods nationwide. Sound the Alarm installation and fire safety events will take place in more than 100 communities across the country, providing a lifesaving service in our quest to reduce death and injury from home fires by 25%.

Every day, seven people die in home fires, most in homes that lack working smoke alarms. Sadly, children and the elderly disproportionately lose their lives. That’s why the Red Cross rallied an army of volunteers and launched our Home Fire Campaign in 2014.  Since that day, we have documented 235 lives saved! Come join us in saving lives!

Serna Village is a clean and sober community centered upon strength-based, peer support, participant-driven intervention strategy.

One particular participant-driven community activity we’re most proud of is our organic community garden. The garden could use some extra “TLC”, and the residents would be thrilled to have help from Day of Caring volunteers. The garden program lead would be especially pleased to meet with volunteers in advance to share her vision of expanding (and tending to) the garden. Please consider accepting Cottage Housing’s Serna Village community garden project for Day of Caring (2017).

Roseville Heights Community Park Day
As one of the oldest parks in Roseville, Weber Park sits in the heart of the Roseville Heights neighborhood. Due to the proximity of a local homeless resource center, Weber Park prohibits residents to feel safe in using their own community park. Over the past several months, residents have to come together to form an active neighborhood association to combat issues occurring at their park such as transient loitering, police activity, and an increase in trash and debris. As part of this project, you will get to help residents and community partners clean up the park by pruning overgrown bushes, picking up trash and debris, and cleaning existing play equipment. The clean-up day will also include a celebration for the residents where you can volunteer to help organize pickup basketball with local law enforcement, yoga, and flag football. There will also be a BBQ lunch provided.

Project Hands that Help
Francis House Center has provided services to people experiencing homelessness for over 40 years, and along the way, we keep everything we can in case it’s useful.  BUT that means we have too many things that have expired, or we can no longer use.  We want to triage our supply room and offices, and refresh our site by:
(1) purge the things that are no longer of use to anyone
(2) organize the things that we do need to keep
(3) prepare to re-distribute items if there are other programs or nonprofits that can use them
(4) prep and paint offices for a new look so our clients enter a space that is bright and optimistic.

If it’s a nice day out, we’ll put a small crew to work on refreshing exterior spaces like our back courtyard and front parking area.

YMCA of Superior California

Extreme Makerover – The Y Welcome Center!
If the walls of Sacramento Central YMCA could talk, we would hear the family names of the Capital City’s greatest leaders of the last half-century. They swam, coached their kid’s basketball teams, were donors and Board members, too.  We would also hear names of thousands more families from all walks of life that found belonging.  The found welcoming like that of a helpful neighbor.

For many, they came to the Y because it was the only place they could go. There are back stories of Y members and supporters, who tell us they only learned as adults that they sold peanuts or candles because that helped the Y provide Financial Assistance for them to go to camp. Single and dual parent families from all backgrounds and means have coached each others kids, and helped build the diverse community that Sacramento is today.

Have you visited the Y lately? It is still one of the most affordable, welcoming and popular places for child care, summer camp, to learn to swim, and stay fit, in spirit, mind and body. In 65 years, its impossible to know the number of people who walked through the front doors. The Y Lobby has been a pass-through for so many people and so many years, it’s needs an extreme makeover!  The Y respectfully proposed to take the first step transformation with volunteers on the Day of Caring, and make the YMCA Welcome Center welcoming again.

The lobby space is approximately 450 sq ft. and needs paint plus creative ideas to encourage the Y to be appear more open and inviting as a vibrant neighbor in our Midtown YMCA community.  Our members and participants parents want a space to be social, read, or just be around other people.  We believe the proper configuration will allow the Y to be more efficient with members, AND provide a safe and friendly place for the loyal decades-long membership base that see the YMCA as their essential second home.
