Literacy Support Council volunteer training dates

Feb. 9, 2010 -- United Way California Capital Region certified agency, Literacy Support Council of Placer County, supports the Placer County Library program called PALS (Placer Adult Literacy Service). PALS trains volunteer tutors and matches them one-on-one with adults who need help in reading and writing English. The service is free and confidential.

Several times a year, PALS has a training class for tutors. The next training class will be held Friday, March 26 from 6 - 9 p.m. continuing on Saturday, March 27 from 9 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. This class will be held in the Rocklin library and pre-registration is required.

If you or someone you know is thinking about becoming a tutor for a new reader, call the program coordinator, Paula Westeren at (530) 886-4530 to get more information or to register. She can also be reached by e-mail at: PALS@placerlibrary.org.

Prospective tutors should be in Placer County and 18 years of age or older. Once matched with a new reader, the tutor and student work out times and places to meet for a total average of about four hours a week.

The Literacy Support Council is an all-volunteer program and we are always on the lookout for people who would like to eventually join its board of directors. They  meet once a month in various libraries in Placer County. The next meeting is scheduled for February 23 in the Auburn Library at 1 p.m. Everyone is welcome to attend and discuss ways that can help the PALS program succeed.
