AmeriCorps VISTAs Help Build Our Community

Blog

In honor of Martin Luther King Day, Sacramento VISTAs joined the annual local MLK365: March for the Dream event. MLK365 aspires to uphold Dr. King’s message of collective progress by bringing together diverse groups and individuals to connect and build valuable bonds.

This year, the VISTAs participated in the Diversity Expo held at the Sacramento Convention Center. During the event, our VISTAs volunteered with other AmeriCorps members, and service groups including Girl Scouts and teachers, to man the merchandise booth where they met many people interested in giving back. This was a fantastic way for our VISTAs to engage with individuals from the Sacramento community. The MLK365 event involved the VISTAs in community building: all merchandise proceeds have been allocated to finance next year’s March for Freedom. Any donations made at the merchandise booth went to an education fund that will support educational programs in the Sacramento region which speaks to United Way’s Square One Project by ending poverty in school. Our VISTAs were able to immerse themselves in the Sacramento community during the MLK365 event and help demonstrate the importance of education.
